Weird Spring

This is has been the strangest spring.  We get one day that's really warm then a week of 20 degree colder temperatures. The fish seem to be confused. Yesterday at a local pond there were a ton of bass warming themselves on the flats. It was frustrating to see 10 bass schooled near shore that wouldn't hit anything. Many would swim away as soon as my fly hit the water. I was able to pick up one bass from a school that was cruising.

I think if we can just get a few days in the 70's the fishing will be amazing.

I have found that when the bass or even bluegill jet off from the water’s edge, once a fly hits the water, there will be no hits most of the time. I have read that this nervous attitude by the fish is brought on my too much fresh rain water and fluctuating temperatures especially in early spring. During the periods of erratic weather the barometer readings are high, which puts fish in a negative feeding mode. Sorry for getting a bit technical----Thanks for sharing ----------------nice bass

    1. The fish looked to be warming themselves. The water they were in was less than foot and a half deep in most places with a dark bottom. I'm sure it was 10-15 degrees then the deeper water.

  2. The weather here has been all over the place. It was in the 50's on Thursday and Friday with all of the snow and ice gone, high 40s and windy Saturday and Sunday...then it started snowing Sunday toward the evening, and this morning there was over 2 inches of snow accumulated. Unreal! haha

Way to make the best of it while you were able to!

  3. We've certainly had the same spring weather. Luckily the weekends have been really nice. I'm trying again this weekend.

  4. #14-#16 YELLOW wet fly of some sort that will only sink 1-2 inches while you strip it slowly. Long, light leaders.

    You're welcome.
