Flies for White Bass

A while back I fished with Thomas Harvey from Carolina Fly.  Our target was white bass and we did really well with a red bead-headed white wooly bugger. I didn't really want to tie these but after finding none to buy online I realized I had to. I decided instead of a white hackle feather I'd use large pearl cactus chenille. I like how they turned out and I tied a few small ones for crappie.

  1. Look great too me! Replacing the hackle makes for less expense and a really easy fly to tie. Just what you want when fishing for Panfish etc. Besides, as I have posted on my blog, I am a big fan or Red on the Head!

  2. I have never used white. I was afraid it was too un-natural but I have been seeing alot lately. Those look great and if they caught fish then I'm in.

  3. Pretty little flies.
Flies as such have a reputation for taking brookies.

White Bass yes and Crappie with these flies would be a killer. Bright colors like these patterns for early Spring Crappie are a must to get some awesome hits. These could even be used with ultra light rigs as well as the fly rod. Thanks for sharing

  5. Rainbow Chaser, I have a thing about red in flies as well.

Joel, they work. I actually caught some fish today. I'm working on a post about it.

Brk Trt, I can see that. I have caught trout with white wooly buggers before.

Bill, I'm hoping to hook up with some crappie. The bass seem to like them.

  6. Hey Kevin,

Looks like the weather has put a "no go" on NY steel this year. I'm up for some whites if you are.

  8. Those will fish for sure man. Ever try a scaled down "jiggie" for whites? Its become my new go-to, right after clousers of course.
